Welcome to the 2024 – 2025 concert season of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra! Whether you are a long-time patron of our concerts or are curious to attend for the first time, we are sure that the power of live orchestral music will inspire you, move you, and bring you joy!
This season we celebrate my 25th season as Music Director and Conductor of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. What an incredible quarter-century it has been!
I am deeply honored to serve this community. Together with the DSO staff and the incredibly talented musicians in our orchestra, we have presented moving and inspiring performances, including five staged operas, three staged ballets, a staged musical, rock and country concerts, and many other concerts around the Tri-State region. We have attracted world-class guest artists, been featured in a nationwide PBS special, expanded education concerts and offerings, collaborated with numerous other Dubuque organizations, promoted Dubuque composers and performers, and brought a new blend of diversity to our programming.
We do it all because of the amazing power of music. We know that a live orchestral performance can change lives. We know that because, for me personally—and every member of the orchestra—that is exactly what it did. Our goal is to perform at such a high level that our music will inspire you, bring you joy, and move you in a deep and unique way.
In honor of my 25th anniversary, we are pulling out the stops with an incredible line up of performers and performances all season long. We will welcome world-class soloists like cellist Zuill Bailey and violinist Rachel Barton-Pine. We will collaborate again with the Heartland Ballet to present a complete staging of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet. We will commission and premiere two new works by composers with strong ties to the DSO: a new flute concerto by DSO Principal Flute Timothy Hagen and the Symphony No. 1 by Dubuque-native Michael Gilbertson.
Some of the musical masterpieces this season include “Pines of Rome,” Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, Ravel’s “Bolero,” Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (which is perhaps my “signature piece” with the DSO), and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. We will present another Classics program dedicated to Latin-American music on which we will welcome back bandoneon-virtuoso Charles Gorczynski.
To accommodate the staging and dancing needs of the Swan Lake ballet, those performances will take place at the Heritage Center at the University of Dubuque, meaning that there will be four, not five, pairs of Classics concerts at Five Flags Theater.
Our two family concerts are specially designed for kids of all ages. They can have pictures taken with Santa after the Holiday Family Concert, and the Winter Family Concert will feature brilliant and hilarious actors including Dubuque-native Michael Boudewyns. The orchestra and I will also perform Ultimate Rock Hits in January and Summer Melodies in June.
So please join us! We can’t make the magic happen without YOU! As always, we thank you for your support.
Musically yours,
Dr. William Intriligator
Music Director & Conductor
