The DSO’s Adopt a Musician program is dedicated to enhancing the music education of fourth grade students in Dubuque and the tri-state area.
What began in 2011 as a small pilot project in three fourth grade classrooms has expanded to a robust program serving 16 schools in the Dubuque Community School District, Holy Family Catholic Schools, and Platteville School District. DSO musicians are “adopted” by a fourth grade classroom, which they visit five times throughout the school year. The musicians serve as musical ambassadors, engaging students in discussion, music making and instrument demonstrations, creating a meaningful and personal experience for all involved.
“Adopted” musicians also support the work of the schools’ music teachers, working with them to plan visit content tailored to help students reach fourth grade standards and expectations in music.
Each school is able to adopt their DSO musician at no cost.
