Dubuque Symphony Announces 2022 Student Concerto Competition Winners

The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Student Concerto Competition. It was held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 30, 2022.

Judging 10 performances were Eleanor Bartsch, DSO Concertmaster; Dr. Timothy Hagen, DSO Principal Flute and Philip Bergman, DSO Principal Cello

Tuba player Brett Tomkins, 15 years old from Dubuque, IA, took first place for his performance of Alexj Lebedev’s Concerto in One Movement. Brett is a student of Danny Rowland.

Flutist Mariah Schmitt, 17 years old from Farley, IA, won second place for her performance of C. Chaminade’s Concertino. Mariah is a student of Julia Omarzu.

Alto Sax player Emily Davisdon, 16 years old from Dubuque, IA, won third place for her performance of Paule Maurice’s Tableux de provence, mvt 5. Emily is a student of Micki Marolf.

Honorable Mention was awarded to, Will Seigl-Gesin & Heidi Wood, Violin duet, both 16 from Platteville, WI, studying with Carol Carlson.

The competition is sponsored by the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League. It is open to 8th-12th grade students in the tri-state area and designed to inspire more advanced students to prepare, audition, and compete for the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra.
