Oboist Chanmi Kim was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. As a young girl, she fell in love with classical music and dreamed of being an opera singer.
Later, she discovered the vocal qualities of the oboe and began to study in earnest. Chanmi has performed concertos with many orchestras, including the Seoul Youth Orchestra, and has been giving solo recitals since she was fifteen.
Chanmi served as Principal Oboist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and has been performing with the Missouri Symphony since 2017 every summer as Co-Principal Oboist. Additionally, she has freelanced with various orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, National Chinese Performing Arts Orchestra, Regina Opera Company, and private recording projects. She resides in Tampa, Florida, where she is actively freelancing and teaching privately. She also served as a judge for the Utah Double Reed Society Competition.
Currently, Chanmi is the Principal Oboist of the Dubuque Symphony in Iowa.
Since moving to the United States, she has completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the New England Conservatory and her Masters of Music degree and Professional Studies diploma at Mannes School of Music, studying with Sherry Sylar.
Chanmi is also the proud owner of VIVID REEDING, a unique double reed specialty online store. When she is not making reeds, you can find her in the kitchen baking or cooking. She is also a passionate karaoke singer
