The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to experience Symphonic Landscapes, an immersive concert of vivid, sweeping soundscapes, Saturday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Five Flags Theater.
This highly anticipated program marks the return of former DSO Concertmaster Eleanor Bartsch, now a violinist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Bartsch takes center stage as soloist in Samuel Barber’s beloved Violin Concerto, one of the crown jewels of the American violin repertoire. Lyrical, expansive, and soul-stirring, the concerto unfolds like a panoramic journey, capturing both quiet intimacy and the bold spirit of American musical expression. Bartsch’s return promises a performance filled with warmth, virtuosity, and deep personal connection.
Adding to the sense of community and shared artistry, members of the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra will join the DSO for a special side-by-side performance of Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia. This powerful work, with its noble themes and surging intensity, stands as a symbol of unity and hope.
The program concludes with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1, an immersive soundscape that moves from brooding, windswept beginnings to soaring climaxes and moments of hushed reflection. Both intimate and epic, the symphony provides a stirring finale to a concert rooted in storytelling and musical connection.
