Dubuque Symphony Orchestra to Perform World Premiere of Dubuque Native and Pulitzer Prize Nominated Michael Gilbertson’s Symphony No. 1 March 8-9 at Five Flags Theater
(DUBUQUE) The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra continues its celebration of Maestro William Intriligator’s 25th Anniversary Season with a breathtaking program of timeless masterpieces and bold, new compositions that showcase the ensemble's virtuosity and Intriligator’s dynamic leadership.
The concerts open with a captivating overture by Jessie Montgomery, Composer-in-Residence of the Chicago Symphony. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of musical traditions, “Overture” showcases Montgomery’s mastery in blending classical, jazz, and contemporary elements seamlessly.
The DSO has commissioned Dubuque-raised and Pulitzer Prize nominated Michael Gilbertson’s First Symphony. One of the most promising and accomplished composers of his generation, Gilbertson’s works have earned him widespread acclaim and recognition in the world of contemporary classical music. “I feel very strongly about the role the DSO plays in helping to promote and develop Dubuque composers,” shares Music Director and Conductor William Intriligator. “During my tenure we have commissioned and premiered many works. Our performance of Michael’s Symphony No. 1 on these concerts is the capstone of my 25th anniversary season and a huge opportunity for the orchestra and its audiences to be present for this exciting world premiere. Michael is a musical genius, and as we look forward to hearing his latest composition for orchestra.”
Celebrated as a leading interpreter of classical works and for her extraordinary ability to connect with audiences, violinist Rachel Barton Pine makes her DSO debut performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto. “We are bringing in huge star-power with Pine,” continues Intriligator. “Having her perform with the DSO has been on my bucket list for years. Through her incredible concerto playing, wonderful recitals, many recordings, and advocacy for under-represented composers, Rachel is a unique star in the classical music world!”
