A Timeless Ballet Experience: Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Takes the Stage May 3-4, 2025

For over a century, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake has captured the hearts of audiences around the world with its exquisite blend of breathtaking ballet and a hauntingly beautiful score. This spring, the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is partnering with the Heartland Ballet to bring this iconic masterpiece to life in a fully staged production at John and Alice Butler Hall, Heritage Center.

It has been more than nine years since the DSO last staged a full ballet production, making this collaboration a rare and eagerly anticipated event for both longtime supporters and new audiences. Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor William Intriligator, the DSO will join forces with the Heartland Ballet: Marina O’Rourke, Artistic Director, and Megan MacLeod, choreographer, to deliver an unforgettable performance that blends the power of live orchestral music with the grace and emotion of live ballet.

“This collaboration is not just about presenting Swan Lake as it was meant to be experienced,” states Intriligator. “It’s also a celebration of the strong ties between the DSO and Heartland Ballet, both of which have long been cornerstones of the cultural landscape in Dubuque.”

“We look forward to bringing a fresh vision to this timeless work,” Intriligator added. “This is an experience that will leave a lasting impression on all who attend. It’s an opportunity to witness the intersection of music and dance in its most captivating form!”

Swan Lake tells the enchanting and tragic story of Princess Odette, cursed to live as a swan by an evil sorcerer, and her search for love that can break the curse. The ballet’s sweeping score, filled with lush melodies, serves as the emotional backbone of the story, guiding audiences through a narrative that explores themes of love, betrayal, and redemption.

Featured guest artists include Leah McFadden, dancing the dual role of Odile/Odette and Dubuque native Patrick Mihm dancing the lead role of Prince Siegfried. Mihm began his training at the Dubuque Academy of Ballet at the age of 11, where he studied for three years. At the age of 14, he moved to southern Florida to begin his training at the HARID Conservatory. Two years later, he moved to New York City to finish his training at Ellison Ballet. Both are currently dancers with the Colorado Ballet in Denver, CO, where McFadden is a Principal dancer and Mihm was recently promoted to Soloist.

The performances will take place on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 4 at 2:00 pm at the University of Dubuque Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall. 2255 Bennett St, Dubuque.

With tickets starting at just $27, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience a world-class production in Dubuque’s own backyard. Demand is soaring, so now is the time to secure your spot for this extraordinary, one-of-a-kind performance.
