Hosted by the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and Dubuque Museum of Art, the
Color and Contour of Music Art Contest is an annual event celebrating the strong ties within Dubuque’s rich arts community. Entrants were asked to create an original work of art using the theme of Darkness to Light, with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony as inspiration.
Winners are as follows:
Elementary school (K-5th
grade)
Winner: The Dancing Girl by Abigail Thorsbakken, grade 2 at Kennedy Elementary
Middle and High school (6-12th grade)
Winner: Symphony from Dark to Light by Brianna Baluyut, grade 11, at 7 Arrows Homeschool
College and Adult
Winner: Light into Dark by Ellen Henkels

“Thank you to all of the participants for sharing their talents.” shares Caitlin Donald, Visitor Services Coordinator at the Dubuque Museum of Art. “We were happy to see increased interest from youth and adults. It’s exciting to see how the artists each year interpret the theme. We’re always amazed by the imagination we see in the work submitted.”
Winners receive tickets to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s performance of “Beethoven’s 5th” on February 15-16, 2025 and a Family Membership to the Dubuque Museum of Art. Winners’ art will also serve as cover art for the DSO’s concert program book that weekend.
